I see you!

Mind what people do not just what they say...

On my way home this evening from Long Beach and I saw a guy on the sidewalk of the freeway off-ramp.  He is holding a sign made from cardboard asking for help for himself and his 2 children and wife.  He looks the part well enough, clothes are not a complete tatters but look worn and a bit dusty (a San Diego Chargers jersey and denim shorts), he looks like he has showered recently but not too recently, a couple of days worth of facial hair growth.  He actually looks the part pretty well, if one were to completely dismiss the fact that he had a heavy gold chain around his neck.  Okay maybe there is a good reason for it but it made me a bit curious.  Then as he is standing in the shade of a telephone pole he reaches in to his pocket and pulls out an iPhone to check his messages/texts.  He puts the phone back in to his pocket when someone rolls down their window to offer him money.  He calmly thanks them and walks back to the sidewalk near where I am waiting for the light to change and continues to hold his sign for the next person.

Now I understand that times are hard right now and people have to find a way to make a living but I actually was offended because it seems to me he was deliberately misrepresenting his situation.

Okay so life has thrown a few roadblocks my way when it comes to writing.

First the bad news: I will be utterly unable to complete my NaNoWriMo goal by the end of the month.  Life has just thrown too many things in my way to get it done.  C'est la vie.

Now the good news: I will be continuing the story.  I will continue to post a new part of the story every week or so.  No guarantees about its length beyond that it will be at least a couple of pages.  I will basically be putting this together as though it were a NaNo, i.e. I will hog-tie my inner-editor and throw him in the corner.  Once the story is complete, well, I will deal with that when I get there.  I will still be using the NaNo filter for the story so that only those interested will see the updates.  As such, I should be able to give a pretty good approximation of when the next part will be finished.  I dare not plan any further ahead than that, however.

NaNoWriMo: Prologue

Collapse ) Chapter 1 will be in a locked post visible only to those who are on my NaNo filter.  If you wish to be on that filter, let me know please.

For those who don't know the world of Stormwind, it is the world that my friends and I role-play in. The surface of the world is wracked by violent storms and humans and thier allies live on continents that float above the vicious storms that cover the world. It was not always like that, however. Long ago the surface was a verdant place where people lived thier lives. This story tells how the world was rent asunder and became as it is now.
I see you!

I was coerced in to attempting NaNoWriMo this year. I figured that it was probably a good opportunity for me to establish the origins of my Stormwind gaming world and get back in to writing, which I enjoy. I will be nice and not just post my stuff without filtering it to those that are interested and putting it behind a cut. If you are interested please let me know and I will add you to my list.

Strange days...

I should have paid attention to the earthquake yesterday and realized that today was going to be a bit odd. A couple of weeks ago I had put in a request to for some new work pants. I ordered three pairs. Well, I get to the office this morning and get a message that my pants have arrived. The woman who gives me the message sounds a bit bemused while she is talking to me so I ask her what is wrong with the pants. She responds by telling me that nothing is wrong with them but they take up a lot of space and I need get them taken out of the office ASAP. At this point I start thinking to myself that there is no way three pairs of pants can take up that much room in the office. Two minutes later I get to where my pants are waiting for me. Imagine my shock when I see that there is a good sized box with pants in it. Well, I begin to take out my 3 pairs of pants when the same woman who delivered the first message tells me that ALL the pants in the box are mine. That's right, all 32 pairs of pants.
Apparently when the order went in the company we use for uniforms accidentally placed a 2 behind the 3 on the order form and then proceeded to fill the order without confirmation or double checking. I am really glad that I don't pay for the pants.
So here I am with 32 new pairs of pants and still hardly believing it. Definitely strange days.

No Doubt

Interestingly, I am not having any second thoughts about my upcoming wedding. I find this a bit surprising given that in the society we live in today we are bombarded with scenarios where the bride and groom are both having second thoughts and are told that its okay to have second thoughts and that everyone has them. I am not even concerned that I am not having second thoughts about this. What does this say about me? Does this make me a fool? Is this something that bodes well for the future?
Personally, I think that it simply means that I am so certain about how I feel about her, I have no doubt of her feelings for me, I am ultimately confident of our ability to communicate and work through any problems we have, that I go in to this with no illusions of a happy-rainbow-marriage-land making all our problems go away so I have no rational reason of any kind to have any second thoughts.
Emotionally I am a bit nervous about the wedding itself and the accompanying reception. However, the nervousness centers around the ceremony going well, how well I will be able to perform our first dance and that sort of thing rather than anything concerning whether or not I am doing the right thing and whether or not we belong together.
Even with being a bit nervous I still feel grounded and able to provide an emotional support base for the both of us so that I can keep her from flying apart should she even need that support. At the moment while we are both stressed we have a pretty good handle on it. Granted, that could change with a minor catastrophe or a major problem but so far we have been out in front of everything enough for us to work through the problems that have cropped up thus far.

Been a while

It has been a while since I last posted so I figured I would do as requested and answer some questions that have been put to me.

Q. Most people I know are artsy or craftsy or both, so - what is your favorite medium to be artsy/craftsy with?
A. Words (little known fact actually), and D&D

Q. In reference to the above question, what current in-process project do you think of first? (If you're one of the few non-artsy/craftsy people I know, I'm sure you've got projects of your own, so pull your answer from those.)
A. Right now its D&D. I have a campaign going that I have not been able to play/DM in a while and I am feeling the withdrawls.

Q. What's your dream project (artsy/craftsy or not)?
A. Designing an official campaign for D&D

Q. Describe to me (short version, please) one of your most important interpersonal relationships, please.
A. This is impossible to answer in a short. However, most of you have witnesses my most important interpersonal relationship first-hand.

Q. Are you happy in your current living environment? Why or why not?
A. Yes. I have everything I really need and someone to share it all with.

Q. What did you wear to your high-school graduation?
A. Clothes.... okay, slacks, shirt and tie.

Q. If you didn't attend or have a high-school graduation, tell me what you wore to a life-changing event in your life and what that event was.
A. N/A

Q. What is one of your most favorite scents?
A. I have two. First, the smell of grilling steak on a charcoal grill. Second, the smell of live pine trees.

Q. In the mornings, what is the first thing you do (after the standard bed/bathroom activities I hope we all complete every day or so)?
A. This time of year, pop a Claritin-D.

Q. Have you ever met a ghost (someone from the other side of the veil, an unexplained energy manifestation - pick the description that best suits your outlook)?
A. Not as such, no.

Q. If you've answered yes to the above question, tell me about it?
A. N/A

Q. Are the majority of your friends witty?
A. Yes

Q. Do you consider yourself witty?
A. Occasionally, not as often as I would like.

Q. Do others consider you witty?
A. Probably not so much.

Q. How many books live at your house (apartment, domisile?)
A. More than can be conveniently counted.

Q. Do you periodically escape to other eras?
A. Yes

Q. To the above question, in real life, or only in your mind?
A. Yes

Q. Are you happy right now? (In general)
A. Yes

Q. If you could ask yourself any question, what would it be?
A. What the hell was I thinking?

Q. Take the answer to the above question, and answer it for me. Please.
A. That's the problem, I wasn't.

Citizenship meme

You Passed the US Citizenship Test

Congratulations - you got 10 out of 10 correct!

Well at least I know now that I could actually pass the test that would make a citizen of the country I was born in. :-P I find it rather sad that so many of today's population could not pass a citizenship test. Still, the questions were rather easy.

I see you!

A few days back a friend of mine, Sir Coda to those who know him, asked a rather simple question of the Imperial Crown candidates and fellow knights of the Adrian Empire.

"Which is more important:
To protect the structure of an organization (of any
kind) even when that protection would circumvent the
truth of a given situation or to seek the truth at all
times even if the truth would topple the organization
or a segment of it?"

This seemingly simple question touched off a flurry of responses varied both in the viewpoints and the weight the question was given. It got me to thinking and while I have always believed that the truth of a matter was of paramount importance I had never really paid sufficient attention as to why it was important to me. I always dismissed the question by saying that its the right thing to do or that its the most accurate way to figure out what to do next. Well, being influenced by Terry Goodkind's writing and having done some research in to objectivism and its philosophy I actually sat down and thought out why I believe the way I do. What I came up with follows.
Please, feedback and discussion is encouraged with this. If you want to disagree with what I think here then by all means do so, but be prepared to defend the position you bring.

I have thought long and hard about this question. I even spoke to Sir Coda in trying to comprehend some of the deeper meaning in this question. My conclusions, such as they are right now, are as follows:
First of all truth exists of its own accord. One person may perceive truth differently from another or even refuse to acknowledge that a specific truth exists, but truth exists independently of our wishes and beliefs. Truth is quite separate from belief and while a person's memory may be accurate in remembering details, what truly happened is not always what they believe happened.
Second, knowledge is power. Truth in its purest form is one of the most powerful forms of knowledge in existence. Specific truths can end decades long relationships or build trust depending on the will and intentions of the person using those truths. A great person can take a horrible truth and, rather than destroying something with it, create an opportunity to build trust and confidence.
Third, anyone can be brought to believe an untruth and everyone has believed an untruth at some point in their lives. There is no exception to this rule as it is part of being human. Whether someone fears something to be true or wants to believe something, given the proper motivation anyone can be brought to believe anything. The fact that one believed an untruth is not as important as how one behaves when learning they believed an untruth and what they learned about those around them and, more importantly, themselves.
Fourth, accepting a truth can be very painful. This pain has led many people to believe that truth can be bad. Truth is neither good nor bad, it simply is. The good or bad comes in how it is used. What many fail to realize is that pain is a necessary part of life. Most people rationalize that because pain is unpleasant anything associated with it must be bad. What they do not realize is that pain teaches at a basic level that goes beyond our ability to reason and our self awareness.
With all the above being said, I would answer that seeking the truth is always the appropriate course of action. If the revealing of a truth would cause the structure of an organization of people to collapse then I would say that it was not the truth that caused the structure to topple but the people who could not accept the truth who toppled the organization. The organization, in and of itself, has no inherent value. An organization is merely a tool to facilitate the beliefs of the people in the organization. The real value lies in the people and what they bring to the organization. If a tool is broken than you find and/or make a better tool that will not break. At times this may require starting from the beginning.
