On my way home this evening from Long Beach and I saw a guy on the sidewalk of the freeway off-ramp. He is holding a sign made from cardboard asking for help for himself and his 2 children and wife. He looks the part well enough, clothes are not a complete tatters but look worn and a bit dusty (a San Diego Chargers jersey and denim shorts), he looks like he has showered recently but not too recently, a couple of days worth of facial hair growth. He actually looks the part pretty well, if one were to completely dismiss the fact that he had a heavy gold chain around his neck. Okay maybe there is a good reason for it but it made me a bit curious. Then as he is standing in the shade of a telephone pole he reaches in to his pocket and pulls out an iPhone to check his messages/texts. He puts the phone back in to his pocket when someone rolls down their window to offer him money. He calmly thanks them and walks back to the sidewalk near where I am waiting for the light to change and continues to hold his sign for the next person.
Now I understand that times are hard right now and people have to find a way to make a living but I actually was offended because it seems to me he was deliberately misrepresenting his situation.
